Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.): \u201cWill individuals who assaulted Capitol Hill police officers be eligible for this fund?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) \u201cWill you commit that none of this money will go to President Trump\u2019s campaign donors?\u201d<\/p>\n

During Tuesday\u2019s Senate hearing before an appropriations subcommittee, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche could not commit. \u201cI am not committing to anything beyond the settlement agreement,\u201d Blanche said in response to Sen. Coons\u2019 question. And to Sen. Van Hollen: \u201cAnybody in this country is eligible to apply if they believe they are a victim of weaponization.\u201d <\/p>\n

That reply, of course, doesn\u2019t answer the question.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Blanche also maintained that it\u2019s not up to him to decide eligibility as the \u201cAnti-Weaponization Fund\u201d will be managed by five commission members. But, per the Justice Department\u2019s Monday press release announcing the fund\u2019s launch, the attorney general will appoint all five members\u2014although one will be chosen \u201cin consultation with congressional leadership.\u201d<\/p>

The Office of the Attorney General\u2019s explainer document of the fund states that \u201conce the funds are deposited into the Designated Account, the United States has no liability whatsoever for the protection or safeguard of those funds\u2026or any other fraud or misuse of the funds.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

To put it more plainly: anyone could be eligible. <\/p>\n

According to the Justice Department, the commission doesn\u2019t have to disclose everyone who receives money. \u201cWill you commit to making reports fully public so Americans know who is getting taxpayer dollars out of this settlement fund?\u201d Sen. Coons asked Blanche. The settlement agreement between the IRS and President Trump, his two eldest sons, and the Trump Organization, specifically states that the commission members will give the attorney general \u201ca confidential written report that includes the name and address of each claimant who has received any relief and if so, nature of such relief.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s obviously laws that exist around privacy that may prevent some of the information that the commission takes in from being fully public.\u201d Blanche responded\u2014a statement that provides those who run the fund an easy outwhen asked who and why recipients will get the money.<\/p>
