Chief among them, of course, is Elon Musk, who used\u00a0a small fraction\u00a0of his enormous wealth to put Donald Trump back in the White House\u2014a political investment that has paid off in spades. But another player milking his proximity to Trump for personal gain is the president\u2019s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who, as I show in this\u00a0<em>Mother Jones<\/em>\u00a0excerpt, has\u00a0parlayed\u00a0his official role as America\u2019s top diplomat into massive personal wealth. Kushner\u2019s gilded, hapless journey to billionaire-dom,\u00a0much like the explosion of oligarchic wealth in America, didn\u2019t begin recently, but stretches all the way back to the 1980s.\u00a0Behold some highlights.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movingandmortgagehub.com\/?p=438\">\u201cCan We Make the Protesters Look More Violent?\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>1981:<\/strong> Jared Kushner is born in Livingston, New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1990s:<\/strong> Israel\u2019s Benjamin Netanyahu visits the Kushners\u2019 New Jersey home, reportedly sleeping in Jared\u2019s bedroom and shooting hoops with him in their driveway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong>\u00a0Kushner, no academic standout, enters Harvard. He was accepted after his father, Charles, pledged $2.5 million\u2014to be paid after Jared\u2019s matriculation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2005:<\/strong>\u00a0Charles Kushner gets two years in prison after pleading guilty to 18 counts of tax evasion, illegal campaign donations, and witness tampering\u2014he hired a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, a tryst he secretly filmed and sent to his sister.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006:<\/strong>\u00a0Kushner buys the\u00a0<em>New York Observer<\/em>\u00a0for $10 million\u2014money he says he earned doing real estate deals during college. He reportedly goes on to order \u201chit jobs\u201d against family foes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2007:\u00a0<\/strong>Kushner Companies buys 666 Fifth Avenue for $1.8 billion\u2014nearly all borrowed\u2014the most ever paid for an NYC office tower.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2008:\u00a0<\/strong>Mortgage meltdown: Kushner sells a 49 percent stake in the building\u2019s retail space for $525 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2009:<\/strong>\u00a0Kushner marries Ivanka Trump in \u201clavish\u201d ceremony\u2014complete with Regis Philbin crooning\u2014at a Trump golf club.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2010:\u00a0<\/strong>666 Fifth Avenue is appraised at $820 million\u2014less than half what the Kushners paid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2011:<\/strong>\u00a0Occupancy at 666 Fifth Avenue plummets; in a refinance bid, Kushner Companies sells off a nearly 50 percent stake in its office space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2011\u20132013:\u00a0<\/strong>Kushner\u2019s family donates to multiple foundations that support West Bank settlements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015:<\/strong>\u00a0Kushner negotiates with Qatari Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani (HBJ), former head of Qatar\u2019s sovereign wealth fund, seeking his personal $500 million investment in 666 Fifth Avenue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2016:<\/strong>\u00a0Kushner helps run his father-in-law\u2019s presidential campaign. After Trump is elected, UAE leader Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan cancels a meeting with President Barack Obama to meet with Kushner instead; Russian official Kirill Dmitriev sets out to make Kushner a Kremlin asset.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 2017:<\/strong>\u00a0Trump sworn in; Kushner becomes a senior White House adviser but retains the vast majority of his interest in Kushner Companies; he also forms a back-channel personal relationship with Saudi leader Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), including trips to Riyadh and private texting sessions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>March 2017:<\/strong>\u00a0666 Fifth Avenue refinancing scuttled amid concerns over Kushner\u2019s conflicts of interest; HBJ pulls out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 2017:<\/strong>\u00a0Charles Kushner lobbies Qatari government to invest in 666 Fifth Avenue. According to Kushner biographer Vicky Ward, Qataris interpret the move as Kushner saying, \u201cIf you don\u2019t pay my father, the Americans are going to sanction an invasion of your country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 2017:<\/strong>\u00a0666 Fifth Avenue still flailing.\u00a0<em>Vanity Fair<\/em>\u00a0asks, \u201cIs Jared Kushner the World\u2019s Worst Real-Estate Investor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>February 2018:<\/strong>\u00a0The\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0reveals that multiple countries have discussed manipulating Kushner via financial entanglements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>March 2018:<\/strong>\u00a0MBS bragged to UAE leader that he has Kushner \u201cin his pocket,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Intercept<\/em>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 2018:<\/strong> Trump meets with Qatari emir in Oval Office. Abraham Accords ease tensions between Israel and Gulf States but offer nothing for Palestinians, a deal Hamas vows to undermine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 2020:<\/strong>\u00a0Trump pardons Charles Kushner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 21, 2021:<\/strong>\u00a0As President Joe Biden takes over, Kushner launches Affinity Partners, a private equity firm that goes on to secure billions in investments from Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>February 2022:<\/strong>\u00a0Biden administration sanctions Russia\u2019s Dmitriev.<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 2022:<\/strong>\u00a0The\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0savages\u00a0<em>Breaking History<\/em>, Kushner\u2019s \u201csoulless\u201d new memoir: \u201cKushner\u2019s fealty to Trump remains absolute. Reading this book reminded me of watching a cat lick a dog\u2019s eye\u00a0goo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 7, 2023:<\/strong>\u00a0Hamas attacks Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel launches a retaliation campaign that will reduce Gaza to rubble, kill at least 72,500 Gazans, and injure 172,000 more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>February 2024:<\/strong>\u00a0Kushner insists he won\u2019t play a role in the second Trump administration; he also says Israel should consider permanently relocating Palestinians, in part because \u201cGaza\u2019s waterfront property could be very valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>March 2024:<\/strong>\u00a0Affinity announces a plan to develop a hyperluxury resort in a protected wilderness area in Albania considered the \u201cjewel\u201d of the Adriatic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>November 2024:<\/strong>\u00a0Trump, elected to a second term, says he\u2019ll make Charles Kushner America\u2019s ambassador to France.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 2025:<\/strong>\u00a0Affinity becomes the top shareholder of Phoenix Financial, reportedly linked to Israeli settlements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>September 2025:<\/strong>\u00a0UN commission finds Israel guilty of genocide in Gaza;\u00a0<em>Forbes<\/em>\u00a0proclaims Kushner a billionaire; Kushner brokers a $55 billion purchase, with Saudi Arabia, of video game giant Electronic Arts. (MBS loves video games.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 2025:\u00a0<\/strong>Kushner and Trump special envoy (and business partner) Steve Witkoff announce Gaza \u201cceasefire.\u201d Israel continues to occupy most of Gaza.<\/p>\n<p><strong>November 2025:<\/strong>\u00a0Kushner and Witkoff propose a unilateral peace plan that cedes territory to Russia, bars Ukraine from NATO membership, and caps Ukraine\u2019s military capacity. It was \u201cdrafted solely by Dmitriev,\u201d according to the\u00a0<em>Insider<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 2026:<\/strong>\u00a0Trump appoints Kushner and Witkoff to the executive board of his new Board of Peace, which bills itself as a \u201cpeace-building body\u201d focused on (but not limited to) Gaza. Among its founding members: Qatar, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and UAE.<\/p>\n<p><strong>February 2026:\u00a0<\/strong>Trump names Kushner his new \u201cenvoy for peace.\u201d Kushner and Witkoff lead Iran negotiations, despite limited experience and Kushner\u2019s business ties to Iran\u2019s foes. Negotiations fail.\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0op-ed: \u201cThe Trump team is running [foreign policy] like a Trump subsidiary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>March 2026:<\/strong>\u00a0US and Israel attack Iran, which closes the Strait of Hormuz; Affinity\u2019s assets top $6 billion as Kushner solicits more funds from Iran\u2019s adversaries. \u201cTechnically, I have not joined the administration,\u201d he insists, adding that he\u2019s just a \u201cvolunteer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 2026:<\/strong>\u00a0Trump announces a potential bailout of UAE, now struggling as a result of Kushner\u2019s diplomatic failures. As the war drags on and fuel prices soar, Democrats launch an investigation \u201camid mounting reports that Mr. Kushner is wielding diplomatic powers in the Middle East while soliciting billions of dollars in capital from foreign powers whose interests diverge sharply from those of the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<footer>\n<section><h3>This is how change happens.<\/h3>\n<p>One story at a time.<\/p>\n<p>This investigative reporting takes time too.
