Back in\u00a02017,<\/span> Tesla promised to bring an all-electric semitruck to market that would have a\u00a0longer range and lower cost than its competitors. Then, the trucking industry waited\u2014and waited. The initial production target of\u00a02019\u00a0came and went, as did each newly announced date over the next three\u00a0years.<\/p>\n

But in\u00a02022, Tesla\u00a0finally unveiled its Tesla Semi\u00a0and started to get pilot versions on the road for testing. The\u00a0Class\u00a08\u00a0battery-electric truck hit performance targets well beyond what Daimler, Volvo, Kenworth, Peterbilt, and other companies were delivering with their all-electric models. As of April\u00a029, Tesla says it has finally\u00a0started high-volume\u00a0Semi production at its factory in Sparks, Nevada.<\/p>\n

Now, the Semi\u2019s combination of mileage and price appears set to transform an industry hungry for an affordable way to move freight without burning diesel\u2014especially in California, the country\u2019s top market for electric trucks.<\/p>\n

So says Ray Minjares, heavy-duty vehicles program director at the International Council on Clean Transportation. The nonprofit research group has been\u00a0tracking applications\u00a0from truck purchasers seeking vouchers under California\u2019s\u00a0Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project\u00a0(HVIP), the country\u2019s biggest state-administered program to incentivize the shift to heavy-duty clean vehicles.<\/p>\n

Of the\u00a01,067\u00a0requests for vouchers submitted during the latest application window, which launched in December\u00a02025, 965\u00a0were for Tesla Semis, he said. That\u2019s far more applications than for any other model of truck, he added\u2014and more than the total number of\u00a0HVIP\u00a0applications for all heavy-duty trucks since\u00a02021.<\/p>\n

And if all those Tesla Semis are actually delivered by the end of this year, that could make up about a\u00a0third of heavy-duty truck sales in the state, Minjares said. That\u2019s\u00a0far above the\u00a010 percent target\u00a0for zero-emissions Class\u00a08\u00a0vehicles set under California\u2019s Advanced Clean Trucks regulation, he\u00a0noted.<\/p>\n

This would be an important environmental accomplishment. Heavy-duty trucks\u00a0emit more than half\u00a0the transportation sector\u2019s harmful air pollution, with disproportionate health impacts for lower-income areas and communities of\u00a0color.<\/p>\n

It would be even more striking given that the Republicans in Congress passed legislation last year\u00a0nullifying California\u2019s power\u00a0to set its own emissions reduction standards for trucks and cars under the federal Clean Air Act, he said. The Trump administration has also moved to\u00a0weaken national fuel economy standards\u00a0and claw back\u00a0federal funds for electric trucks\u00a0and\u00a0EV\u00a0charging.<\/p>\n

Considering the policy headwinds,\u00a0\u200b\u201cstates that have severe air quality challenges and climate goals need to find alternative pathways to enable this transition,\u201d Minjares said. And one of the most important ways to do that is\u00a0\u200b\u201cputting downward pressure on the price that fleets are paying for the vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n

The median price for a\u00a0Tesla Semi capable of driving about\u00a0500\u00a0miles on a\u00a0single charge is just under $300,000, according to\u00a0HVIP\u00a0data. That\u2019s about $138,000\u00a0to $224,000\u00a0less than competing Class\u00a08\u00a0battery-electric vehicles with roughly half the range, he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

And while Tesla has tested the patience of buyers with its delays, the early models it put on the road got high marks from trucking companies and drivers.<\/p>\n

In\u00a02023, during\u00a0three weeks of test-drives\u00a0hosted by the nonprofit research group North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE), Tesla Semis that beverage giant\u00a0PepsiCo tried out\u00a0hit\u00a0384\u00a0miles on a\u00a0single charge. One truck traveled\u00a01,076\u00a0miles in a\u00a0single\u00a024-hour period\u00a0with multiple partial recharges using Tesla\u2019s\u00a0750-kilowatt Supercharger. In another\u00a0NACFE\u00a0test-drive in\u00a02025, a\u00a0Tesla Semi operated by\u00a0freight company Saia\u00a0consistently traveled\u00a0465\u00a0miles on a\u00a0single charge\u00a0while operating two shifts per day, said Mike Roeth,\u00a0NACFE\u2019s executive director.<\/p>\n

As of today, Tesla has\u00a0boosted the range\u00a0of its Semi to up to\u00a0350\u00a0miles for the standard model and up to\u00a0500\u00a0miles for the long-range model. It has also launched its\u00a0Megacharger, capable of delivering up to\u00a01.2\u00a0megawatts of power\u2014enough to replenish about\u00a060 percent of a\u00a0Semi battery in\u00a030\u00a0minutes\u2014available both for\u00a0truck depots\u00a0and at an expanding set of\u00a0public charging sites.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Tesla Semi is twice the range, and half the charging time, of trucks from traditional manufacturers,\u201d Roeth said.\u00a0\u200b\u201cAnd early data is showing it\u2019s a\u00a0third less expensive to purchase.\u201d<\/p>\n

These are all<\/span> appealing characteristics to Jennie Abarca, founder and\u00a0CEO\u00a0of King Fio Trucking in Long Beach, California. She already has\u00a011\u00a0electric trucks in her\u00a035-truck fleet serving the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, including models from Volvo, a\u00a0major manufacturer, and Nikola, a\u00a0startup that\u00a0went bankrupt last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth trucks have been exceptional,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u200b\u201cBut now you have something like the Tesla coming in:\u00a0500-mile range,\u00a030-minute recharge, and $150,000\u00a0less than the current option out there\u2014wow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abarca has applied to secure\u00a0HVIP\u00a0vouchers for\u00a020\u00a0Tesla Semis, with each voucher providing a\u00a0$120,000\u00a0discount\u00a0to the up-front cost of a\u00a0truck. Additional incentives available from the\u00a0ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles\u00a0and from utility\u00a0Southern California Edison\u00a0for drayage trucks, which carry cargo from ports to inland warehouses, can further reduce that cost by up to\u00a090 percent.<\/p>

Buyers must still pay sales and excise taxes on the full sticker price of the vehicle and cover registration fees. But with the full stack of incentives, the cost of a\u00a0Tesla Semi\u00a0\u200b\u201cwill look more like a\u00a0really nice used diesel [truck], which is what I\u00a0would normally buy,\u201d Abarca said.<\/p>\n

And once it\u2019s on the road, an electric truck is less expensive to fuel and maintain, she said. These operating advantages, along with lowered electric drivetrain and battery costs, are expected to bring electric trucks into parity with diesel vehicles in terms of total cost of ownership within the next five to\u00a010\u00a0years, according to research from the\u00a0International Council on Clean Transportation,\u00a0NACFE, and other groups.<\/p>\n

To be clear,\u00a0\u200b\u201cI can\u2019t buy these trucks without incentives,\u201d Abarca said.\u00a0\u200b\u201cThe trucking industry has been in a\u00a0hole since the end of\u00a02022\u201d due to the supply chain disruptions and inflationary pressures of the Covid pandemic, she said.\u00a0\u200b\u201cAnd I\u00a0don\u2019t have investors. I\u00a0only have the profits I\u00a0make from my business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rudy Diaz, owner of Long Beach\u2013based trucking firm Hight Logistics, also said he wouldn\u2019t have been able to buy the\u00a025\u00a0electric trucks in his\u00a075-vehicle fleet without incentives.<\/p>\n

But he believes that electric vehicles are the future of the industry\u2014if they can come down in price and weight and their range can be increased between charges. That\u2019s why he\u2019s applied for\u00a0HVIP\u00a0vouchers for\u00a015\u00a0Tesla Semis and plans to install several Megachargers at his Long Beach\u00a0depot.<\/p>\n

The Volvo and\u00a0BYD\u00a0trucks he now operates are capable of making it from ports to the complex of\u00a0distribution warehouses in the Inland Empire region\u00a0of Southern California and back on a\u00a0single charge,\u00a0\u200b\u201cand not necessarily run out of battery,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u200b\u201cBut to do that, you\u2019re going to have to have downtime for charging.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the Tesla Semi\u2019s\u00a0500\u00a0miles of range, he notes,\u00a0\u200b\u201cI can go to San Diego and back. I\u00a0can be competitive with diesel in other areas where I\u00a0couldn\u2019t compete before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Such flexibility is what could make the Tesla Semi launch\u00a0\u200b\u201cthe kind of thing that truly catalyzes change,\u201d said John Verdon, co-founder and chief commercial officer of\u00a0Nevoya, a\u00a0startup that owns and deploys electric trucks carrying freight in California, Arizona, and Texas for large corporations and third-party logistics operators.<\/p>\n

Nevoya has been operating five preproduction Tesla Semis in California as part of its fleet of about\u00a050\u00a0electric trucks, Verdon said. Most of the company\u2019s routes are between the ports of\u00a0LA\u00a0and Long Beach and the Inland Empire. But its Tesla trucks are able to make longer runs from Southern California to the Central Valley and San Francisco Bay Area, he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

Extended range isn\u2019t just about longer hauls, though, he said\u2014it\u2019s about getting the most value out of vehicles whose higher up-front costs can be more than counterbalanced by lower operating costs, as long as they\u2019re being used as often as possible.\u00a0\u200b\u201cWe\u2019re no longer bound by the notion that we have a\u00a0vehicle that\u2019s superexpensive, has limited range, and inadequate spots for them to charge.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s too soon<\/span> to tell how the Tesla Semi might push its competitors to improve the range or pricing of their electric trucks. But as Minjares noted, legacy truck manufacturers face a\u00a0structural challenge in competing against their all-electric rival, with relatively low volumes of electric vehicles being built on production lines designed to support both internal combustion and battery-electric models.<\/p>\n

\u201cLegacy manufacturers are stuck between multiple technologies, weighing them down with development and production costs,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u200b\u201cBut Tesla has bet on one technology, giving the company greater focus and discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whether the trucking industry has the buying appetite to make that bet pay off is another question. Roeth noted that Tesla has stated its Nevada factory is capable of producing about\u00a050,000\u00a0Semis per year. For context, there are only about\u00a02,000\u00a0electric heavy-duty trucks on US roads today, according to International Council on Clean Transportation data. In fact,\u00a050,000\u00a0vehicles would constitute roughly a\u00a0quarter of the total annual US market for heavy-duty diesel-fueled trucks.<\/p>\n

\u201cTesla has two things it has to do: Convince customers to buy electric, and convince customers to buy\u00a0its<\/em>\u00a0electric,\u201d Roeth\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

While the Tesla Semi has already established its clear performance and price advantages, it has yet to demonstrate the\u00a0\u200b\u201creliability and durability\u201d of its technology\u00a0\u200b\u201cat\u00a0500,000\u00a0miles, at\u00a0750,000\u00a0miles, at\u00a01\u00a0million miles,\u201d he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

Tesla won\u2019t hit its full Semi production capacity right away, according to Minjares. It\u2019s also likely to seek out markets outside the US. It will face tough competition from leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers that now dominate the industry, as well as new entrants like Windrose, which last month\u00a0sold its first electric truck in the US\u00a0at a\u00a0price comparable to the Tesla Semi\u2019s.<\/p>\n

But Minjares believes these kinds of competitive pressures are what\u2019s needed to make other manufacturers\u00a0stop fighting state clean-trucking policies\u00a0and start embracing innovation. \u201cThis transition was never going to be sustainable if the underlying economics were not favorable,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u200b\u201cThe challenge on the policy side has brought that into clearer focus.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>
