Dave Chappelle is<\/span> happy to make tens of millions of dollars on anti-trans comedy routines\u2014\u201dI\u2019m team TERF,\u201d he said in a 2021 special\u2014but now apparently draws the line at Republicans turning those jokes into policy.<\/p>

In a Wednesday interview on NPR\u2019s Newsmakers<\/em> show, Chappelle said he resents that the Republican Party\u2019s 2024 platform \u201cran on transgender jokes\u201d and was \u201ca weaponized version of what I was doing.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He recalled a time when Lauren Boebert, then a GOP House rep from Colorado, took a photo with him and shared it on Instagram with the caption \u201cJust three people who understand that there\u2019s only two genders.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cShe should never do that with a person like me,\u201d Chappelle said.<\/p>\n

But the comedian has long injected anti-trans material into his comedy shows, most notably in a multiyear, multi-special streak beginning with his 2017 Netflix special Equanimity<\/em>. In that special, and in 2019\u2019s Sticks & Stones<\/em>, Chappelle called being trans similar to lying about one\u2019s racial background: In Equanimity<\/em>, he compared being trans to Rachel Dolezal, a white woman who pretended to be Black. The 2021 comedy special in which he claimed to be on \u201cteam TERF,\u201d The Closer<\/em>, included Chappelle\u2019s extended defense of J.K. Rowling, whom he stated was \u201ccanceled\u201d for saying \u201cgender was a fact.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of the trans community, I\u2019ll go ahead and address your weakest defenses. How much do you have to participate in my self-image? Not at all.\u201d Dahlia Belle, a transgender comic, wrote in the Guardian<\/em> shortly following the release of The Closer<\/em>.<\/p>

On Wednesday, Chappelle asserted that he was the subject of \u201crage-baiting\u201d during this time. \u201cI am a filthy nightclub comic,\u201d he told NPR\u2019s Michel Martin. \u201cThat\u2019s all I see myself as.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople had drinks, and they just were gruff and said what they said back then. And it was never a big deal,\u201d he continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But Chappelle\u2019s fixation on trans people, and anti-trans routines, extended across years and multiple specials. They were indistinguishable from, and grist for, the material of conservative streamers and right-wing edgelords. The comedian\u2019s remarks about what would happen if LeBron James said he was a woman and dominated the WNBA were used in Donald Trump\u2019s 2021 rally against trans rights; Candace Owens made the same Rachel Dolezal comparison last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI challenge Black cishet men to interrogate what their identity means to them,\u201d writer and transgender rights activist Raquel Willis wrote in a 2021 social media post about Chappelle\u2019s comedy. \u201cWho are you without being the \u201chead\u201d of the household\/tribe\/culture?\u2026Who could you be if you took on expanding Black masculinity and manhood without having to repress other Black experiences of the feminine, gender nonconforming, queer variety?\u201d<\/p>
